Whiplash is both a technical and lyrical piece for two mallet vibraphone that focuses heavily on hand independence and utilizing the whole range of the instrument. The title Whiplash stems from how quick the piece changes in both aggression and reaching across the board to hit certain notes. I enjoy writing pieces that have multiple “personalities”. For this piece, it has quick, staccato moments and slow, lyrical phrases. I also implemented unusual time signatures to add to the confusing nature of the piece, as well as some groovy sections to bring out more “personality” to the work. Whiplash requires one 4 octave vibraphone and is for two mallets only.
