Alfred Sanalila, age 50, passed away unexpectedly on May 31, 2025. He was the father of one of my friends from high school. When I received the news, I genuinely couldn't believe it because I've never experienced the passing of someone I knew before then. For days I could not stop thinking about it and how his family must be feeling. At the time I was experiencing writer's block, but after thinking about it more, I wrote a rough draft for this piece.

I wrote this piece set to the words of a Robert Frost poem called "Nothing Gold Can Stay." The poem is an exploration of the cycle of life, and I thought it was perfect for the music. Alfred was born in the Philippines so out of respect for the culture of his family I translated the poem to Tagalog, the native language in the Philippines. I hope that this piece brings solace to the Sanalila family and to anyone who has experienced a similar loss.
