To put it simply, Augment was written about and during the time of my life where I was the most stressed. High school had just ended and I was preparing to go into college. Between finances and keeping grades up, I was under intense amounts of stress and pressure. Writing pieces of music like this helps me stay in a good mindset. I had a lot of fun writing this piece and I'm very grateful that Mia Gazley could help me out and record the piece for me.
Mia Gazley is a versatile saxophonist who regularly performs in a variety of genres on all saxophones. With a master’s degree from the University of Florida and an undergraduate tenure at the University of British Columbia under the guidance of Dr. Jonathan Helton and Dr. Julia Nolan respectively, Mia has made a profound mark on the musical landscape of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. In her pursuit of being a well-rounded musician, Mia has performed with the Vancouver Legacy Jazz Orchestra, the Sisters Jazz Orchestra, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Saxophilia Quartet, and various other ensembles. Mia holds the baritone saxophone chair with the Azura Quartet, who won first place in the Canadian National Music Festival Chamber Music Division in 2017. Mia is also an endorsed artist for Rousseau Mouthpieces.
