"Al Dente" is an Italian phrase meaning "to the tooth." It's a term used in cooking to describe pasta, rice, or vegetables that are cooked to a firm texture when bitten. The term "Al Dente" in music describes a loud, fun, and energetic piece of music using cookware as instruments. The music almost exclusively uses irregular time signatures to add to the perplexity of the piece. I wanted to write a percussion piece that was fun for the audience to watch and fun for the performers to play. It is very rudimentary in style but also includes some groove sections as well. The piece also includes solos for each player so they can have a moment to show off their instrument. Al Dente is sure to grab the attention of the audience as well as be a fun challenge for the performers!
